Club House - The 19th

As soon as the descision was made to re-locate the Golf Club (1927) from the cliff top to the north parklands, a Works Committee was appointed. One of their first decisions was to build a new Clubhouse using "Flooring board with a iron roof"

The Clubhouse was little more than a shed with no covering on the floor. The only way to have a welcome cup of tea was to boil the kettle on a kerosene stove.
In spite of this, the "Maitland Watch", in September 1927, described the new Clubhouse as "an ornament to the town" and "a great convenience to the large number of members".

The Clubhouse was sparsely furnished. Two chairs, a table and two forms were all that it contained.

It was soon became obvious that the building was grossly inadequate. Money was scarce as all available funds were used to improve the actual course. However, in 1955 material was obtained to enclose an annex on the western side of the building. Most of the work was done by voluntary labour.

After a lenthy discussion in 1959, on the possibility of enlarging the Clubhouse to cater for the increased membership, Mr. L. Brown and Mr. Paul Keating were asked to make an inspection and obtain quotes for the extending the building by 8 ft. on the eastern side.

Two quotes were received for the work. Unfortunately the Club was not sufficient financial to accept either of them, so the Committee decided to do the work themselves. Mr. L. Taylor was most helpful in carrying out the work and he was rewarded by being an honorary member for 1959. Mr. Jim Burke and Mr. Alec Lock did the necessary electrical work and Mr. Gus Spurling fixed the ceiling. After lights were installed, much more social activity was possible.

A big step in luxury and convenience was achieved in 1960 when a refrigerator was purchased from C.H. Lock & Sons.

Space was still inadequate, so in 1962 the ClubHouse was extended once more, with provision for a tractor shed, kitchen and storage room, measuring 20 ft. x 20 ft. overall.

All efforts were concentrated on painting the Clubhouse, re-fencing the course, errecting new conveniences, and purchasing a 1,000 gallon tank, before any more alterations were made to the actual course.

Plans were drawn up for a new toilet block, to be constructed of brick. The bricks, sand and other materials were subsequently purchased for £35 ($70). Other improvements included the closing in of the verandah and the provision of a wash bowl.
